~~~~~~~~~~My Review~~~~~~~~~
I have a real thing for cowboys at the moment. I'm not sure how it happened--I've always like them but recently... so I jumped at the chance to review this book and I wasn't disappointed. I've not read any of Ms Ball's books before but I certainly will be reading more.
The writing is great--fluent, descriptive, not too fluffy but just really nice to read. It reminded me a little of some of the older Harlequin books I used to read and admire. Sitting in cold, old England, I was able to fully picture Holden and Summer's world not to mention the gorgeous cowboys that came along with it .Interestingly, I almost immediately took to both characters and the brothers, which I think can be tough, particularly when there is a big cast of secondary characters. Holden is caring, sexy and dutiful--traits that I just love in my heroes.
The pacing is next to perfect and I love a good bit of suspense. I don't like to do spoilers but lets just say, when I thought all was going to work out, something else came up. Both Summer and Holden have a lot of issues to conquer and I was willing them the whole time to get past them and get together. This book definitely delivered everythinig I expect and hope for from a cowboy romance and fans of this genre won't be disappointed. I will be re-reading it soon!
“You believe me?” Someone had told her once not to ask questions you don’t want the answer to. Her body suddenly chilled and her chin wobbled.
“Of course I believe you. You are a victim, Summer, and I don’t understand how everyone knew all the details. There are privacy laws now.”
“Not if your name is Beverly. I think the sheriff has a thing for her. She is always bringing him cakes and pies.”
A smile crossed Holden’s face and he chuckled. “I know it’s not funny but I can’t imagine those two together. The thought gives me nightmares.” He pulled her back into his arms and cradled her head against his chest with his palm. He kissed the top of her head.
Summer gazed up at him. His eyes glittered in the moonlight. The desire she saw was unmistakable. Yearning surged through her. The beating of her heart grew faster as his head inch down until his delectable lips were against hers. She reached up and wrapped her arms around his neck as he pulled her flush against him. The kiss grew bolder and she opened for him. His kiss was powerful and she felt weak in the knees.
Suddenly, Holden stepped back and the words unfair and wow came to mind.
“The door just slammed. One of my brothers is around.”
She nodded and smiled at Holden’s shortness of breath. She seemed to have the same effect on him.
